Romeo and Juliet vs. American Me
A Study of Group Conflicts

Defend your Characters

Break into groups of three or four to post "letters" defending and/or criticizing the actions and motivations of other characters in relation to key points in the film. Use Google+ or Google Docs for groups to write back and forth to each other as their chosen character.

Culminating Debate

Group "In-Character" Debate. Each group of three to four students will represent a character from either text. Groups will be responsible for creating at least one costume piece (hat, mask, cloak, etc.) and synthesizing their character’s ideas regarding the debate topic:

"Did characters in each work make the right choices?"

Each side must weigh in on the pro or con side and be ready to defend their opinion and back it up with research and logic following established rules of debate. Students must stay in character throughout the debate, so good research is essential. Standard High School Debate Rules may be altered to suit the specific classroom.
