Introduction

The following projects were developed by Jefferson Elementary School 4th and 5th grade teachers from Oakland Unified School District, Oakland, CA.

The teachers participated in a My eCoach Coaching Program at Jefferson Elementary during the second semester in 2005.

Open Court Projects for Fifth Grade
    •People of the West WRL by Susan Lee
This WRL extends the Going West Open Court theme. Students research the websites and answer questions.
    •Going West Activity by Evelyn Martinez
This Activity extends the Going West and Journeys and Quests Open Court themes. Students research websites from the Corps of Discovery WRL, then summarize some of their findings in the handout. This activity also has students learning how to use Microsoft Word - copy and pasting pictures, saving documents, and formatting text.
    •Corps of Discovery WRL by Evelyn Martinez
This WRL extends the Going West and Journeys and Quests Open Court themes. Students research websites on Sacagawea and Lewis and Clark, then answer questions.
    •Historical Forts WRL by Emily Rosa-Jones
This WRL supports the Journey and Quests Open Court theme. Students research information about a state and a fort located in the state.
    •Historical Forts Activity by Emily Rosa-Jones
This Activity extends the Journeys and Quest Open Court theme. Students use the Historical Forts WRL to research information about a historical fort, then record their findings in the worksheet provided. Students are also required to make an oral presentation about their findings. This Activity also supports English Language Development standards.
Open Court Projects for Fourth Grade
    •Communication WRL by Johanna Brekke-Brownell
This WRL extends the Communication Open Court theme. Students learn about animal and human communication through exploring various websites and completing activities listed in this WRL.
Other
    •Electricity and Magnetism WRL by Susan McDonnell
This WRL supports science curriculum standards for 4th grade. Students explore the websites as they learn about science concepts of electiricy and magnetism in class.
