My Philosophy
All children can learn. Their energy is your biggest asset, something that every teacher should utilize to their advantage rather than fight against.
My Community
I teach in a community where there is a clear divide between the have's and the have not's as well as white and black. There is no need to skirt around the issue because it is very tangible in the atmosphere of the community and the classroom. The African American community attends public school and the white community attends private schools. As for resources, the nearest "attraction" is fifty miles. Within this community there is a Walmart: no movie theater, no museums, no parks. There are very few entertainment outlets for adults, much less children. The church serves as a major supporter of community activities and small recreation. Local businesses struggle to stay afloat and the town, which boomed less than a decade ago, also struggles to regain financial stability for its citizens.
My Environment
The school district is incredibly supportive of new teachers and dedicated to breathing life back into their schools. However, corporal punishment is still widely practiced. All schools use scripted programs for reading (Success for All) and Every Day Counts Calendar Math.
My Roles and Responsibilities
I teach 18 third grade students, with a range of levels from 1st grade reading level to a 5th grade reading level.
