Summary
Great civilizations have risen and come to an end for a variety of reasons. In the Civilization Film Contest student groups take the role of expert researchers seeking to present a animated film idea to the major animation film company "Bisney, Inc." The students must conduct research on a past civilization and create a storyline based on actual people, events, folklore, mythology, or legends of their civilization. Students are to put their research and storyline on a slide show presentation then present to the Bisney film executives (fellow classmates and invited attendees) and defend their reasons why their particular civilization and story idea is the best to make an animated film about.

Rationale
Students have a hard time connecting the past to the present and future or why ideas and concepts studied in history are important to know. In the Civilizations Film Contest project students are engaged in a realistic task while gaining an understanding about various civilizations - including why civilizations rise and fall, important contributions, and effects of warfare and conquest. Through this project, I hope to show students that the past impacts us today in our daily life. I also hope that students will realize that knowledge about history can inform us of why things are today and how it relates to our future. This is meant to be an introductory unit of study of the various civilizations that students will learn in the 6th and 7th grade. This project is also meant to build student researching and presentation skills.
